Exercise 6-4: Retreive/Recall Discrimination
Throw retrieve object, recall, retrieve, front or finish, hold (two different repetitions).
Handler will throw a retrieve object, move directly behind the dog and either recall the dog first and then send for the retrieve, or dog is cued to retrieve object while handler stands behind dog. Both repetitions require a 2-second hold and return to handler in front or heel position.

Purpose: Demonstrate the ability to listen for instruction as opposed to following a set routine.
Equipment: A retrieve object.
Exercise set-up: Handler will stand with dog in heel position while holding a retrieve object. Dog may sit or stand at heel but must be consistent throughout the exercise. The exercise begins when the handler cues the dog to stay and then throws the object at least 15 ft. (4.5 m) forward. The handler then moves directly behind the dog 15 ft. (4.5 m). The dog is then directed with a single verbal cue to fetch the object. The dog must pick up the object and return to the handler in either front or finish position with no additional cues. After a 2-second pause, the handler will take the retrieve object from the dog’s mouth, at which point the dog may be praised and the first part of the exercise ends. The second repetition of the exercise begins when the handler gives a stay cue with the dog in heel position, throws the retrieve object at least 15 ft. (4.5 m), moves directly behind the dog 15 ft. (4.5 m), and calls the dog to heel position with a single verbal cue BEFORE cueing the retrieve. After the dog is in heel position, he/she is then cued (verbal and/or hand signal) to fetch the object. The dog must return directly with the object to either front or heel position with no additional cues. After a 2-second pause, the handler will take the retrieve object from the dog’s mouth, at which point the dog may be praised and the exercise ends.
On both variations, the dog may be cued to stay as the handler moves behind the dog. The handler may choose which variation to perform first. Handler must remain stationary for the entire exercise except when moving behind dog.
Scoring: Pass/Not yet!
Non-qualifiers: The dog does not perform as cued by the handler. For example, the dog comes to heel when sent to fetch, or fetches when he/she is called to heel position. The handler gives additional cues for any part of the exercise, except during the stay while walking behind the dog. The dog does not deliver to hand or drops the object while returning to the handler. The handler does not stand in one spot without moving while waiting for the dog to finish any part of the exercise. Video does not permit the exercise to be adequately judged.
Tip: None.
