Exercise 5-5: Send to a Target, Drop, Heelwork
Send to a target at 35 ft. (10.6 m), return to moving heel, moving drop, circle left, pick up dog, proceed to next exercise.
After being sent to target, dog will hold a stay while the handler returns and circles the dog. Team then heels forward, dog drops on cue, handler returns to the dog and team heels to the next exercise.
Purpose: Demonstrate distance work and stimulus control with handler movement.
Equipment: Target (optional).
Exercise set-up: The exercise begins when the handler cues the dog with a verbal and/or signal to go forward 35 ft. (10.6m) to an optional target and cues a stay in any position. Handler then approaches dog, goes around behind the dog and moves directly (or with a momentary pause) into heeling (a single verbal and/or signal to cue heeling is acceptable) for a distance of approximately 10-15 ft. (3-4.5m). At that point, the handler will cue a verbal OR signal drop (down) to the dog while continuing to move forward, with no pause, for an additional 10 ft. (3 m). The handler will then again circle behind the dog and go directly into heeling (pause optional) and may proceed with either formal heeling or moving engagement to the start position of the next exercise. If handler chooses to heel to the next exercise, a single verbal and/or signal to cue the heeling is acceptable.
Scoring: Pass/Not yet!
Non-qualifiers: Dog fails to respond appropriately to any single cue. Handler does not continue normal forward motion when cueing the dog to drop. Video does not permit the exercise to be adequately judged.
Tip: None.
